Denaby’s Cup Victory

Winterton 1, Denaby United 2

Denaby played their first preliminary round tie in the English cup at Winterton (Scunthorpe), winning 2-1. Wright and Killourhy (penalty) got their deciding goals, Ellis scoring for Winterton, who were champions of the Scunthorpe and District league in the last two seasons.

Winterton forced a corner, but Goodhand shot wide. Denaby returned to the attack and Killourghy missed from close range, Denaby kept up the pressure, but we are having to get used to the uneven pitch. In a Winterton breakaway Denaby were fortunate when Vickers punched the ball away as he was bundled into the net. Another Winterton attack saw an Ellis header go over the bar. Denaby began to get a grip on the game and only occasionally did Winterton relive the pressure. After 40 minutes Wright scored for Denaby, who led 1-0 at half-time.

Killourghy (penalty) scored for Denaby, Ellis for Winterton in the second half.
