Attack Holds High Promise
Worksop Town 6 Denaby United 3

For most of the 90 minutes play at Worksop on Saturday, it was on the cards that Denaby United could have come out on top . Shey played some good – at times excellent – football, but lost and, conceded their 30th goal in only five matches.

It should be said at the start that one man who was not to blame for the six goals notched up against United was goalkeeper Clamp, on loan from Denaby Northcliffe, and playing his first game for the Midland League club. He acquitted himself exceptionally well palming shots down, tipping them over the bar around the post like a veteran, and generally covering the Worksop forwards with fine anticipation.

Clamp was so confused that had the ground not been waterlogged and money, you would most certainly have saved the first two Worksop goals. As it was easy to slip, missing Sanderson’s 40th minute short of the Denaby defence clear badly, and a minute later failing to reach what was apparently passed back from Taylor

Unstoppable Shop.

Workshops the goal was a different matter as Sanderson eight and unstoppable shot high into the net from 20 yards, after 20 min. It wasn’t until King and made it 4-0 in the 24th minute that the Denaby forwards really began to challenge.

In particular Kelly impressed and showed a full repertoire of centre forward guile. He was essential after 20 min, Apple Worksop ring confusion and with Smith ready to chip the ball home, Whittam did the job for him. A minute later, Foster scored from a penalty after Smith was brought down.

The Whittaker brothers David and Trevor, showed up extremely well in the second half when Worksop looked at times, a dispirited side. After 40 minutes King had made it 5-2, Bert in the 70th minute, David Whittakers centre was pushed over by brother Trevor.

With David Whittaker and Woodger scenes shots steered just clear by Howard and Kelly later it in the bar, Harris a minute six for Worksop.

Led by Kelly, Denaby’s forward line at last looks capable of going places. The defence must now look to its laurels.
