No Points From Two Games

Denaby United got no change out of their first two Easter matches, being defeated at York 3-0 on Good-1 Friday and at Tickhill Square 2-1  by Scunthorpe Reserves on Easter Saturday.

If they’d had any luck- they might have come out of it with a point on Saturday. LEE flicked the ball over goalkeeper Williams’ head to put Denaby one up in the 30th minute. MINTON got Scunthorpe’s equaliser after 58 minutes, Smethurst pouncing on the ball just as it crossed the line, and it was Lee himself who might have saved the point. There came a brief moment when Williams’ goal was unguarded during a crowded spell of Denaby pressure. Lee side-flicked at the ball as it came to him and would, have diverted it into the net—but for the fortuitous positioning of left-half McGill. The ball struck McGill as he stood there, and re-bounded to be scrambled away to safety. If Lee had fairly belted that ball it might have been a different story . . . but that’s how things go.

But for Lawley and Roberts between them Fletcher might have scored similarly for Scunthorpe after a Minton shot had been saved and Smethurst was off balance. Roberts won the duel finally by kicking for touch.

LUCKY GOAL

The run of the game was against United again when Scunthorpe, via WARD, got their winner after 79 minutes, Smethurst had the shot covered. He went down on one knee k) gather -it to his body when— woof! away it bounced over his shoulder and into the back of the net.

It was not a sufficiently entertaining game to compensate for the cold afternoon (though it has been colder at Tickhill Square this season).

Two comparatively in effective sides mixed it and there was not a lot to write home about. Largely, the defences dictated the run of the afternoon.
