Denaby Woman Remanded On Bail

Before the Magistrates at Donaster West Riding Court Was Mrs. Joan Leach, of Balby Street, Denaby, who pleaded guilty to three offences of obtaining credit to a total of £3 13s 3d by means of fraud,, from the Denby Main Industrial  Co-operative Society. She was remanded on bail for 14 days in the sum of £5.

Said the chairman,Mr. A.E. Emberton, “We want to obtain a probation officer’s report on your home circumstances before we deal with your case.”

Chief Inspector Bernard Vaughan alleged that the method by which she had obtained the money similar on all three occasions.’

On September 15th, he said, she went into the School Walk, Denaby branch and asked to see the manager. She asked him if she could become a member of the Society and filled in a form in the name of Joan Regan, of Wadworth Street, Denaby. She was allowed to take out groceries to credit of £1 5s. 4d. She was in the meantime enrolled under the name of Joan Regan.

On September 16th. the manager went away and left a Mr. Wren in charge. She went in again and obtained more credit. On September 18th she again went in and obtained more groceries to credit of £1 1s said the Chief Inspector.

On September 20th the manager came back from his holidays and seeing that she was in debt sent out Mr. Wren to visit her. He went to the address in Wadworth Street, Denaby, but it was quite apparent to him that the woman to whom he spoke was not the same woman.

On the way back to the shop, continued the Chief Inspector, Mr. Wren saw the complainant in the street and found out from her, her real name and address.

When seen by the police it was stated that she admitted the offences. She told them, “I didn’t have any money. I did it for the kids.”

She told the court that her husband gave her £7 a week.
