Diesel Haulage
Conversion Phase at Cadeby Completed

An important step in the £3 ¼ million development scheme for Cadeby and Denaby Collieries was completed on Monday with the holy system in the dorsal stream at Cadeby Colliery was converted from rope haulage to diesel haulage.

This is a staging conversion to electrical skip winding. Coal will be brought to the surface at Cadeby from both Denaby and Cadeby colliery.

The conversion to diesel haulage means that fewer men will be needed on the haulage. Normally 24 men are employed and only 12 will be needed. Mr J Prendergast, NUM branch secretary at Cadeby said the spare men will be upgraded to the coalface.

On completion of the scheme it is expected that 25,000 tons of coal a week will be produced from the two collieries. This the scheme started two years ago and it is expected to be completed next year. At present there are about 2000 men employed at Cadeby with an output of about 7000 tons. At Denaby about 2500 men are employed and the weekly output is about 12,500 tons. The scheme will mean an increase in output of about 30%.

Mr Prendergast said that it was expected that the skip winding would be completed by next January, but the scheme whereby coal from the two collieries will be brought up at Cadeby is expected to take longer.

The Hague Moor and the Beamshaw seams at Cadeby are now being developed for the introduction of skip winding.
