Dollar for Denaby —From an Old Fan in Ohio

From Ohio, U.S.A., to Denaby United secretary-manager Matt Taylor  has come a letter from an old United fan and player who ” sure would like to meet some of the boys who were around Denaby 34 years ago—and I guess there must be a few.”

His name—Mr. George Dodsley—and his gesture to the club in this peak season (which he notes with considerable pleasure) a green dollar note.

With his greetings and best wishes to his old club, Mr. Dodsley has sent this gift as a small token of his remembrance of happy days at Tickhill Square. He was in England two years ago and says in his letter that he and his wife are hoping to come over again this spring. And when he does, one of the things he wants to do is ” to see the old team play again.”

Remembered Friends

Mr. Dodsley mentions among his remembered friends at Denaby “Alf Duddel, a deputy at Denaby, George Brough, a deputy at Cadeby and Walter Phipps.”

The Denaby team of his day “won the Sheffield cup from

Barnsley at Wath. Some of the old-timers will remember that, for we were leading 7-0 and had a penalty awarded a few minutes from time. But we were not able to take it. The crowd broke on to the field and stopped the game. It went before the League and we were awarded the game.”

Mr. Dodsley mentions members of the team, Brackburn, Thompson, Charlie Rigsby and Jack Westward, as an aid to old memories.

Mr. Matt Taylor has very kindly shown us Mr, Dodsley’s letter, which we feel will be of considerable interest to old Denaby fans—and to other old soccer players in and around this part of South Yorkshire.
