I understand that the car involved did not stop after the accident. I would like to think that the publicity will come to the attention of the driver and that he will come to the assistance of the police.”

Mr Ashley, a bricklayer died in Mexborough Montagu Hospital after the accident, which happened near the junction of Doncaster Road and Crook Hill Road.

Evidence of identification was given by Mr Ashley’s brother, Mr Thomas Ashley, of the same address.

A police spokesman said afterwards that they were looking for a two tone saloon car, light and dark coloured. He said it would have extensive frontal damage, and will probably have a broken headlamp. It was travelling towards Mexborough at the time of the accident.
