Mexborough Tragedy

Drowned Boy’s Thought For Younger Brother

Though over week has elapsed since Walter Flint (10), schoolboy, son of Walter Flint, labourer, of 26, Wood Street, Denaby, was swept away in the Don, at Swinton, his body has not been recovered.

The unfortunate boy, with his younger brother, Frank (8), and two others, after leaving Sunday School on the afternoon of February 4th, went for a walk along the bank of the river, and when in the neighbourhood of Swinton L. and N.E.R. station, as they were playing together, Walter Flint fell backwards into the river.

His younger brother, Frank, got hold of his hand, but Walter released the grip, voluntarily it is thought, not to endanger his brother.

The other boys shouted for help, and Mr. J. Mason (27), miner, of 17, Clayfield Road, Mexborough, ran to the bank and jumped into the river, but was unable to rescue the boy.
