Wins Silver Award

Miss Marguerite Joan Chapman, a Land Ranger, of 10, Poplar Grove, Conisbrough, has been awarded the Silver Medal of the Duke of Edinburgh’s award scheme – after only a year in the guide movement.

Joan, a student at Mexborough Grammar School Sixth Form College, won the bronze award last August. She hopes soon to be granted her “Tawny Owl” certificate, which will put her in charge of a Brownie pack. She already holds the Ranger Service Star.

She said this week at her home, where she is recovering from a mild attack of chickenpox: “I did not find the test too difficult, although a group of us did get lost on the hike the Dales and just managed to miss taking a path on which a bull was loose.

“I am starting now in the Gold award course with a friend, Hilary Biggin, who lives in Elm Green Lane, Conisbrough.

“I shall continue with the Rangers, although next year I start at teachers training College at Alnwick, Northumberland.

“I want to teach, though I do not know yet if I shall do so locally or in another district”
