Elsie is Invited to Kick Off

A holiday camp vacation for two may be within the reach of spectators at one of South Yorkshire’s most talked about football matches at Denaby Main next month.

For the second successive year, show business personalities will descend on Tickhill Square – the home of Midland League club Denaby United – when Fancy Smith’s XI – led of course by Bolton-on-Dearne-born “Z Cars” personality Brian Blessed – take on The Entertainers’ XI, made up of Musicians’ Union members.

The holiday for two at one of Butlin’s Camps is expected to be first prize in a competition organised by Denaby United and the Musicians’ Union, sponsors of the game, and will be just one of the attractions for the crowd – which it is hoped will number in the thousands.

Pat Phoenix – Coronation Street’s Elsie Tanner – has been invited to start the match off, and ‘Fiery’ Fred Trueman may also be among the personalities.

It is also understood that Leeds United manager Don Revie, and former Sheffield Wednesday forward Redfearn Froggatt, may be making an appearance.
