Fatal Accident at Conisbro’ Glass Works.

An inquest, was held yesterday at Mexboro’, on the body of Joseph Hampshire, employed at the Conisbro’ Glass Bottle Manufactory, who was fatal injured at the works    on the previous Friday.

Hannah Hampshire, widow of the deceased, said his age was 52. He had been a labourer at Messrs. Kilner’s glass bottle manufactory, nearly two years. After the accident, deceased was brought to the Hospital at Mexboro’, where she saw him. He was conscious. He said a wheel had gone over him, and that he was” done.”

Tom Batty, carter and shunter at Messrs. Kilner Bros, works, said he and the deceased worked together. About five o’clock in the afternoon, on June 9th, the accident happened. An empty wagon was being taken up the yard to be loaded with bags of bottles. It was a siight gradient. Witness was in front of deceased with the horses. Suddenly he heard an exclamation, ” Oh, dear! ” and looking round he saw a wheel passing over the deceased; it was the hind wheel of the wagon. He did not know whether the front wheel had passed over the man.

The Coroner: Was he sober? — Yes.

Mr. Lee (juryman): Was he subject to dizziness? — No.

Mr. Kilner, manufacturer, said the deceased was a healthy man and a very steady man ; as decent a man as ever came about the premises.

A verdict of ” Accidental death” was returned.
