Fatal Accident at Denaby Main

An inquest was held at the Station Hotel, Conisborough by Mr F.E.Nicholson, on Friday, on the body of John Bellis (29) a single man living at 7 Edlington Street, Denaby Main, who was killed whilst working in the pit on Thursday afternoon

Mr Witty was present on behalf of the colliery Company, and Mr Mellor, deputy Inspector of mines was also present.

The evidence showed that the deceased, was a filler, was at work, and while in a stooping position, a burst occurred behind him, and a piece of coal threw out striking him on the back.
Assistance was of course rendered him, but he was unconscious and only lived about 20 minutes. He died before he could be got to the surface.
The occurance was described as purely accidental, and the jury returned a verdict of “Accidental death.”
