Fatal Railway Accident

Yesterday evening, at a little before six o’clock, the guard of a Goods Train on the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire line, named William Mason, met with a shocking death at Denaby.

At that place there is a siding leading to the Denaby Main colliery, and he was in charge of a goods train, part of which was being shunted onto the siding.

While the train was in motion he jumped upon the buffers of one of the waggons for the purpose of uncoupling it from another. The poor fellow, however, missed his footing and fell between the wagons, the wheels of which passed over his neck, almost severing his head from his body.

He was of course killed instantly, and his remains were conveyed to an hotel, at Mexborough, where an inquest will be held. It is stated that the deceased lived at Swinton, but that he came from Crewe.

He was a young man, and was to be married on Sunday (tomorrow).
