Fatality at Denaby Main – Burning

Inquest was held at the Montagu cottage hospital, before Mr Dossey Wightman (district coroner) on Friday week.

The first one taken was that of David Anthony

Walter Anthony stated that he was a miner, and lived at Denaby. Diseased was his child, and was eight years old. He was burnt on Tuesday, 5 November at between 730 and eight o’clock in the morning. Witness and his wife were in bed at the time.

He (witness) had been on the afternoon shift. Neither he nor his wife heard the child go downstairs into the kitchen. Deceased had slept in his bedroom, across the bottom of the bed. He heard the diseased shout out: “Daddy, I am on fire.”

He jumped out of bed and went down and put the flames out. He could not tell how long the deceased had been down. His nightdress had caught fire. He came downstairs alone. They fetched the Doctor to him once, and Dr McClure came, and recommended them to take him to the hospital.

He was taken, but died on 7 November. In his opinion. Deceased had been trying to draw the fire. The fire had been “raked” the previous night. He found afterwards, a shawl across the fender. Deceased was insured.

A verdict of “Accidentally burnt” was returned.
