First Estate Of New Denaby.
Conisbrough Urban Council’s extensive slum clearance and redevelopment programme for Denaby Main took a step forward Monday with the official opening of a 50 houses estate off Wheatley street.
The estate comprises 24 bungalows for older people, linked to a Warden’s unit by an intercom system, two two-bed-roomed houses and 24 three bed-roomed houses. They are centrally heated by warm air units which will burn coke, and the cost of the development (roads and buildings only is £143,417.
The building of this estate has taken 13 months, and it is hoped to start within the year on a 273 house development adjacent to the site.
Opening the estate int the absence of Housing Committee Chairman, County Coun. J. Prendergast, Coun. A. Haywood, said, “These houses will form the pattern on which the new Denaby will be built, and the layout of the estate has been arranged to ensure pedestrian segregation and therefore greater safety.
“The estate has been landscaped and the planting of trees will take place in the autumn,” he added. “For the future I can say that it is our intention to build as many new houses a year as possible until every family in the district has a decent house in which to make a home.”
