She is the second member of her family to do long-distance flying; her brother, a regular soldier at the time, was injured in the Korean War and was flown home via Singapore.

“I’m looking forward to it, but I’m not looking forward to flying,” she told a reporter yesterday.

After leaving school, Mrs Ball became a nurse, and it was while she was working at the Royal Portsmouth hospital, that she met her husband.

Mr Ball joined the Navy as a boy of 16. He is now 26 and was posted to Singapore 11 weeks ago.
