Gallant Miner – George A. Chadfield
Denaby Man´s Bravery Recognised
An interesting presentation was made at the Doncaster West Riding Police Court on Saturday, when Brigadier General Sir Alington Bewicke-Copley, handed over to George A. Chadfield, a Denaby miner, the parchment certificate of the Royal Humane Society for saving the life of a young schoolboy, named Thomas Whitefield,who tumbled in the canal, near to Don View, Mexborough, at which point it was 30 feet deep and 12 yards wide, on June 16th.
The boy was unconscious when Chadfield pulled him out, but artificial respiration was resorted to, and the boy recovered. Brigadier General Bewicke-Copley explained that this was the second occasion on which Chadfield had saved life at about the same spot.
He was only sorry he was not able to hand him the society´s medal, but he congratulated him warmly upon his gallantry.
