Gallant Miners.

On Monday evening, in the Welfare Institute at Denaby, there was an interesting gathering arranged for the purpose of presenting to two Denaby miners certificates of the Royal Humane Society in recognition of their gallantry in rescuing a drowning man from the Don. The men concerned were Herbert Edwards and Harry Smith, and the incident took place on the morning of July 24th, 1928.

Edwards and Smith had just come out of the Cadeby mine after working through the night when they saw a man named John Ryan struggling in the river. They scaled a ten-foot wall, dropped down on to the river bank, plunged in, and rescued Ryan.

Their gallantry was brought to the notice of the Conisboro’ Urban District Council, who in turn reported it to the Royal Humane Society, who have granted a certificate to each man.

These certificates were presented to the men on Monday night in the Welfare Institute by Mrs. Kaye, J.P., chairman of the Urban Council, in the presence of several other members of the Council, and Coun. W. L. Worsley presided.

Prior to the presentation Court. A. Roberts related the incident. Mr. Spencer Baker, Clerk to the Council, also spoke.

Mrs. Kaye congratulated the two men on their plucky and successful effort, and said she was very proud to hand over the certificates to them.
