Here’s wishing !

Here’s wishing Mr Joseph Humphries, 16, Warren Road, Conisbrough, a pleasant seasons sport on the line for football League matches and on the field as a Midland League referee.

Mr Humphries enjoyed this distinction last season, but this year will see his first full season as a linesman accepting football appointments made by the Football League itself.

This deputy at Cadeby Main colliery is an experienced football official. For 13 or 14 seasons he has been a referee under the Sheffield and Hallamshire Football Association and has officiated at many of the competitions held under it’s auspices. On Saturday he refereed the Peterborough – Boston United Midland league game at Peterborough, and his other appointments this month include the Grimsby – Wolves match at Grimsby, as linesman, on Tuesday, at York and Bradford, on the line, and at Newark and Mansfield, as referee.

You just can’t keep away from sport – on Monday he had a busman’s holiday at Denaby United’s sparkling engagement with Ransome and Marles at Tickhill Square.

Mr Humphries had some interesting information for Midland league “fans” about his Peterborough fixture. Two very evenly matched sides, he told me. A crowd of 5,000 and a very profitable gate for the club to share. Here’s a line for Denaby when they meet these two teams. Neither side let up for an instant, and Mr Finch was very glad to have a call in his dressing room from Padgett, the former Denaby player now playing for Peterborough in which city he is now residing.

By the way, you Denaby supporters. Have you noticed how your old players are faring? In the Gainsborough side at South Elmsall was Bob Carter, Don Twells and Ken Mosley – Don, incidentally, was with his wife, a former Conisbrough Working Men’s Co-Operative Society assistant, a spectator at Tickhill Square on Monday evening. Ardron got a goal for Rotherham United, auburn-haired onetime centre half, Hinsley got another for Bradford City and Eddie Burbanks one for Sunderland. Brute was in Huddersfield’s team, and Burton in Scarborough’s. League clubs have a lot to thank Denaby for.
