Holiday Adventure

A young Denaby holidaymaker, Miss Sarah Atkin, of Annerley Street had an unnerving experience while on holiday at Whitby last Thursday.

After bathing at Saltwick, she attempted, laden with bathing attire, to climb the 100 feet cliffs, and became exhausted when nearly at the top. Fortunately, members of the 26 Doncaster (Denaby St Albans) Boy Scout Troop, who were also on holiday there, were within hail and Miss Atkin, who is a Conisbrough hairdresser, was just able to make one of the boys, Patrol Leader Martin Higgins, of Mexborough, hear a cry for help.

Summoning further help, Higgins stood by while other members of the Troop raced up the cliff and held Miss Atkin, who had been clinging precariously to the cliff face, while she recovered sufficiently to be escorted to the top of the cliff.

The cliffs, which are noted in the neighbourhood for the large amount of erosion which takes place have only one path to the top. The path is narrow and winding, and Miss Atkin had attempted the hazardous climb to save time.

She was taken, suffering from shock, to the nearby farm where she was staying for the week.
