Frederick William Horsfall

Assistant Surveyor at the Cadeby Colliery

The funeral of the late Mr. F.W. Horsfall, assistant surveyor of the Cadeby Colliery, and one of the heroes of the recent colliery disaster, took place on Friday at the Denaby Cemetery.

Mr. Horsfall was known by all and held in high esteem. He will be much missed in the village, having been in the parish church since the age of seven, and a Sunday-school teacher in the schools. He was well connected with the St. John Ambulance Brigade, holding prizes which he won in 1906. He was a member of the cricket club, the C.E.M.S., the Institute Mining class, and a most zealous church worker.

The funeral service, which was held in the Parish Church, was fully choral, and was conducted by the Rev. F.S. Hawkes and the Rev. W.J.W. Tunnicliffe.

The choir sang the 34th and 90th Psalms and the hymn, ” On the resurrection morning.”

The coffin was borne from the church to it´s last resting place by members of the Ambulance Brigade, followed by a retinue of members and nursing sisters, under the able command of Superintendent H. Williamson.

Then came the chief mourners, which included :- Mr. and Mrs. J. Horsfall, Miss May Horsfall, Mr. and Mrs. W. Wathey, Mr. and Mrs. E. Wathey, Mr. and Mrs. F. Wathey, Mr. and Mrs. A. Perry, Miss E. Wathey, Miss H. Jones, Mrs. W. Wathey ( South Kirkby ), Mr. Haywood (Sheffield ), Mr. T. Shrives, Mrs. Cook, Mr. and Mrs. E. White, Mr. and Mrs. H. Wathey, Mrs. Tyler ( Ilkeston ), Mr. A. Jones, Mr. H. White, Mrs. R. Middleton ( Sheffield ), Miss F. Smith, Miss B. Bennett, and about thirty friends.

The coffin, which was supplied by Mr. G.L. Robinson, was made of oak, with brass furniture, and bore the inscription :- Frederick William Horsfall ” Died July 9th 1912 aged 21 years.

Whilst the coffin lay in the chancel, a wreath from members of the choir was placed upon it as a token of respect. Many other wreaths from the family and friends were received.

At the time of the 1911 Census Frederick Horsfall lived with his parents James Horsfall, a 42 year old Coal Miner from Sheffield and 40 year old Eliza Horsfall from Ilkeston. They had been married for 21 years. Also in the house was his 18 year old sister May.
