In The Cornfields.

Trespassing in corn fields belonging to Charles Sutton, farmer, of Mexborough, resulted in a number of young people being summoned at Doncaster on Saturday for having done is. worth of damage to the corn.

In the first case, Madge Chambers (18), Sylvia Phillips (18), Elizabeth Birch (16), Florence Breeze (16), of Mexborough Harry Hughes (17), glass hand and Stanley Foster (17), foundry hand, of Swinton, were fined 10s. each.

P.c. Aucock gave evidence of seeing the defendants go into a corn field between Harlington and Mexborough on June 16th. He added that a vast amount of damage had been done to corn fields in the district, and the farmers had complained.

For a similar offence on June 20th, Joseph Croft (21), engine driver, and Bernard Fallon (22), miner, both of Mexborough, were each fined £1.

P.c. Savage said that when charged, Fallon replied, “We get into — trouble wherever we go.”

Defendants denied that they were in the corn saying they were in the hedge bottom.

A fine of £1 was imposed on William Mitchell (26), miner, Wilfred Pass (17), engine driver, and Herbert Brentnall (17), haulage hand, all of Denaby, for a similar offence on June 16th. It was stated that in answer to the charge,

Mitchell said, “I hope it does you good.”
