Intoxicants “On Strap.”

Conisborough Licensee Summoned.

Said to have been the first case of its kind before the court, William Tarlton, licensee of the Eagle and Child Hotel, Conisborough, was summoned at Doncaster West Riding Police Court yesterday for supplying intoxicating liquor on credit.

John Parish and Albert Morton, labourers, were summoned for consuming beer for which they bad not paid.

The case was dismissed under the Probation of Offenders Act on payment of costs, the chairman of the Bench (Mr. W. Hincliffe) saying they hoped it would be a warning to others.

It was stated for the prosecution that the drinks were entered on a piece of cardboard.

The solicitor for defence said the practice was prevalent in public houses, clubs and hotels in mining areas.

There was more in this case than met the eye for the day before the alleged offence took place, certain summonses for breaches against the Licensing Act heard against Tarlton were dismissed at the court.
