Conisbrough Soldier in Ypres

Private Arthus Jarvis, first Battalion, York and Lancs Regiment, has written to his mother, who resides at 9, Claremont Terrace, Holywell Lane, Conisbrough. He intimates that he was wounded in a night attack on Saturday, May 8th.

Writing from Lee’s Court hospital, Faversham, private Jarvis says he was wounded with a bullet, which passed through his right leg.

“We were in a charge last Saturday night. I was only 30 yards from the German trenches when I was hit. I don’t know how Private Needham went on. He was on our right, and I did not see him afterwards. I was not there long, but we had an awful time. I was also atYpres. This hospital is owned by captain of the lifeguards, who has lent it to the nation. It is a fine place, situated about 40 miles from London.”

Private Jarvis arrived in England last Christmas Eve after three years service in India. In a few days he left for Havre, and had an attack of malarial fever. After being in hospital. He came on furlough to Conisbrough, and left again five weeks ago, has been mooted as stated, on as been invalided to the above hospital.
