Kilner Bros Outing (picture)

April 1897

Mexborough & Swinton Times, April 16, 1897

The trip to Crystal Palace, London on Friday night last to witness the third tug-of-war between Aston Villa and Everton was a genuine success.

I am told that nearly 100 of Messrs Kilner Bros work men took advantage of the opportunity of visiting the great Metropolis, and enjoying the great sights including the football match, at which between 70,000 and 75000 were present. It was a red letter day with many of them and they are not likely to soon forget the sights presented to their view. As I had the pleasure of accompanying them I can testify that they enjoyed themselves in what they call a “royal fashion.”

With one or two slight exceptions such as a man getting left at Retford station on returning (he had it to walk home) and another losing the return half of his ticket, everything past off very satisfactorily.
