Library and Reading Room.

Some months ago, it will be remembered, Mr Swithinbank, on behalf of the Lord of the Manor (Mr T.J.Fullerton, M.A., D.L., Thrybergh Hall) promised the villages of Denaby that he would establish a library and reading room for their edification and amusement.

This very generous offer would have been carried out sooner, but so little interest appear to be taken by the home whom it was intended to benefit, that it was near being abandoned by Mr Swithinbank when an earnest application was received by him that the library might be established.

Mr Swithinbank was very pleased with the spirit manifested, and immediately commenced to purchase books and make the necessary arrangements for fitting up the vestry at the Mission Church for the purpose.

On Saturday he came down to Denaby, and gave an excellent address in the room on “reading”. He stated that Mr Fullerton’s which was to improve the minds and morals of the miners, and if his efforts were appreciated that was all he required. He revealed all the books which had arrived, and said others were to follow. There are now more than 200 books in the case – standard works of various kinds of literature.

Some of them are from the Three Library, but the majority of them are from Messrs W.H.Smith and sons Establishment, London.

The library was open to the public on Monday evening, and her few days the reading room will likewise be ready. 10 daily and weekly papers will be on the table – London and provincial.

The following officials have been elected:

G.E. Swithinbank, Esq L.L.D., of Anerley Park, Surrey (agent to the Lord of the Manner), president.

Messes Warburton and Slack, vice presidents,
