A Mafeking Spree at Conisborough.

George Bates, miner, Denaby, was summoned for having been drunk and disorderly at Denaby on 21st of May. The defendant did not appear.

In connection with the same charge William O’Brien, filler, new Conisborough, was summoned for having obstructed the highway at Denaby by fighting on 21st May

Police Sgt Brown said he saw O´Brien as they and several other people were coming out of Well gate into church Street. They have been fighting. Bates was drunk.

A domestic servant gave evidence as to the fighting, and other evidence of obstruction was given.

Bates was fined 21 shillings and costs, and O’Brien 13/6, including costs.

Daniel Jeavons, miner, Denaby, was summoned for having obstructed the police while in the execution of their duty at Conisborough. On 21st of May police Sgt Brown stated that while apprehending George Bates, a defendant in the previous case, he struggled and fell on the ground. We had to drag the prisoner for about 100 yards Jeavons interfered, said he would see him in another place before he would allow the officer to take Bates. After Jeavons gave Bates name and address the officers then let him go.

Kate Saxton, a married woman, living at Conisborough, said that while the officer had Bates in custody Jeavons interfered, and said if the officer wanted his name he must take it off a dog collar.

The defendant called William O´Brien, one of the defendants the previous case, who said he did not see Jeavons interfered with the police. The defendant said he was very sorry it had occurred. He has two brothers in Mafeking and he and his friends were having a bit of a spree. He promised that it would never occur again.

A fine of 17/6, including costs was imposed
