A Man Shot at by a Boy Near Conisborough

On Wednesday, at the West Riding Police Court, Doncaster, George Granville, a youth, living at Conisbrough, was placed in the dock on a charge of shooting at William Phillipson and Walter Berry, young men of Marchgate, Doncaster, with intent to inflict bodily harm, on the afternoon of Sunday, August 23.

Phillipson stated that, on the Sunday in question, he and some friends were in a boat on the Don, at Crimpsall, in the township of Sprotborough. On nearing Hexthorpe flats he saw the prisoner and other boys on the bank.

Stones were thrown at them by the boys, in consequence of which he pulled the ball to the bank and ran after them. He caught one, named Burton, and the others escaped. On turning to go back to the boat he heard a shot fired, and the bullet passed over his left shoulder. He heard one of the lads remarked at the time the shot was fired “take that, you …..!” Before he called reach the boat a second shot was fired, and he recognised the prisoner as the one with the pistol.

The prisoner was committed to the assizes for trial bail being allowed.
