City´s Line.
Well Worth the Nine they Got

Denaby United 2 Bradford City Reserves 9.

If Denaby were surprisingly agile in the first half on Saturday, they were even more so in Monday’s mud against Bradford city. And the most amazing man of the 11 was Jack Williams. He played like a back inspired. In almost every frustration of Bradford intentions he was the stumbling block, and in the beginning of the not infrequent Denaby raids, he too, was the main spring.

City Burst.

Bradford opened with a remarkable burst. First, Patrick blazing, then Swindells, and for 10 minutes it was a desperate defence ranged against a line of forwards, who were always hot stuff when they got away. Once, Denaby broke away, but Herd landed the ball into the city goalkeeper’s arms. City took the lead after 14 minutes. Beckett scored, and what a gem it was! Water shimmered in a cascade as it hit the net. 4 minutes later Denaby were all square, Wilson making a goal for Les Williams, who scored with a long, easy shot with a city goalkeeper out of position. Day, in the Denaby goal, came through a subsequent City barrage magnificently, saving one notable shop from swindles on his knees. Then 14 min after the first city goal, Quayle put Bradford ahead once more. 5 min later it was 3-1 (they were all perfect goals), Quayle, paving the way for Swindles to head in and a few seconds before half-time, Quayle scored Bradford’s fourth.

Desperate struggle.

It was a desperate struggle for Denaby in the second half, valiantly as they played. It was more by good luck them good management that they were not further behind long before Les Williams got their second goal after 11 min in this half, but as it was they were losing 8-2 before the half was 25 min old, Patrick scoring a hat-trick and Quayle completing his with the eighth goal. City had the ball in the net again, but the whistle had gone. These last four goals had come in the space of 4 minutes.

A penalty, in the 33rd minute, taken by Gittins, brought a ninth goal to City, and as if to see the issue, Denaby, too, were awarded a “spot” kick a minute before the end. Williams took it twice, and the City goalkeeper saved both shots, catching the ball each time.

Denaby played their best early in the first half. After the interval it was a case of how many. City were well worth the nine they got!
