Marconigrams

Another public scandal is reported in the vicinity, this time from Conisbro’.

Preparations are already on the way for the Mexboro’ Cricket club ball.

Mr. Chance Thellusson, of Brodsworth Hall, has been appointed a Sherriff of Yorkshire

There is a proposal among the churchpeople of Mexboro’ to erect a memorial to Mrs. Bateman in the shape of tablet for the Parish Church.

There is also an effort in the direction of an electric blower for the parish church organ.

Mexborough Council are not deriving as much revenue from the two markets as they did when they had only one.

The fishmongers will now be transferred back to the old market, which is to be paved with stone setts, and the stalls centralised.

Hearty congratulations to the new Manager of Denaby Main, Mr. Douglas Chambers, who was married onTuesday.

They are agitating for a convalescent home at Wombwell. Why not get Hassall to do them one of those nice posters entitled “So Bracing!”?

A café chantant in aid of the Mexboro’ Cricket Club Pavilion Fund will be held at the West Street Hall on Thursday next November 23rd.

Miss Edith Allen has secured a fine array of talent for her annual concert which is to be held in the Primitive Schoolroom on Thursday, November 30th.

We are told that the music was played to a lively tune after the press were asked to leave Wednesday night’s meeting of the Mexboro’ Urban District Council

If you want an allotment under the Urban District Council of Mexboro’ now, you have to pay a shilling deposit for the tenant-right of the key of your garden-gate.

The wedding of Mr. Douglas Chambers, manager of Denaby Main, and Miss Evelyn Mary Rigg, at Wincobank Church on Wednesday, was quiet but picturesque.

The local ambulance division had a very encouraging presentation night on Tuesday. On that occasion the merits of Mr. W. Simpkins were suitably acknowledged.

The annual ploughing at Mexboro’ and District Licence Victuallers’ Ploughing Association will take place at Highwoods Farm, Adwick, on December 14th.

A smoking concert is to be held at the Miners’ Arms, Mexboro’ on Tuesday Nov 28th for the benefit of Mexboro’ Football Club Sport’s fund. A number of excellent artistes have volunteered their services.

Mexborough Medical Officer of Health, (Dr. J. J. Huey) has been all smiles since Monday, when the Mexboro’ Council appointed Miss Montagu as Health Visitor.

From what we know of Miss Montagu, we quite believe that the health department of Mexboro’ council work will fairly “hum” with activity when she commences her duties as Health Visitor.

If Miss Montagu succeeds in pulling down that desperate infantile death rate at Mexboro’ a bit during her first year of office as Health Visitor, she will deserve to be congratulated.

A list of Miss Montagu’s duties, which we publish elsewhere, will be found interesting.

The failure of Mr. Arthur Wilson, Assistant Overseer and Parish Council clerk, of Conisbro’, to appear at the audit of the accounts at Doncaster, and his mysterious disappearance from the district, created a sensation at Conisbro’ last weekend,

The official position held by Mr. Wilson has been declared vacant and his successor will be appointed to-day.  We understand there is likely to be a very large number of applications.

Advertisers are requested to note that changes of copy for traders’ announcements should reach the “Times” office not later than Tuesday evening, to ensure insertion the same week.

The Operatic Society’s venture with the “Yeoman of the Guard” – the gem of Gilbert and Sullivan operas, rendered in their best style, has not realised so much as last year’s “Gondoliers” by about £17.

The reason is three-fold; the opera is not so bright and lively, and does not attract the ordinary theatre-goers so easily; there are three extra picture-halls in the town and the prices in the theatre have been reduced all over the house.

Taking these facts into consideration, Mrs. Winstanley’s Society did very well indeed

Messrs. Whitworth, Son and Nephew’s motor wagon came to grief on Wednesday on Rawmarsh Hill, and bottles of beer were thrown all over the place.  General regret was expressed among the assembled crowd that the accident did not happen after dark.

It is highly probable that the Dearne Valley Railway Company will in the new year commence service of passenger train between, Wakefield, Grimethorpe. Goldthorpe, and Edlington, and make the provision of a new station for the convenience of Goldthorpe passengers.

At the great International Poultry, Pigeon and Rabbit show, held at Crystal Palace this week, Mr. Lythe of Wombwell was awarded second prize with a young Dutch rabbit.  The same exhibit secured two seconds last week in the United Kingdom Dutch Rabbit Show, held at Leeds. Mr. Lythe was awarded first and special in a class of 41 entries with another exhibit, which was claimed at catalogue price.
