Denaby & Cadeby – Denaby 93 Conisborough 50 – Fine bowling

31 May 1901

Mexborough and Swinton Time, May 31.

Fine bowling by Smith and L Robinson.

Denaby 93. Conisborough 50

When those local rivals met on Saturday at Denaby the result was somewhat of a foregone conclusion. The Conisborough club wasn’t again unable to put a fully representative team in the field, and all the 11, with the exception of J Day made a pushover of this again. Some fine bowling by A. Smith, the Denaby professional, and Luther Robinson, who has more than once before this season scattered the stumps of adversaries at very little cost.

Denaby won the toss, and batted first, to the bowling of Henry Linithan, the Conisbrough pro and George Hardy. A Robinson was the top scorer for the home team, but he gave several chances which ought to have been taken, during his partnership with Riley.

With A Robinson and W. Scott together the score rose freely, from 56 for the fifth wicket to 82 which total. Scott was smartly caught by A Walker, the best bit of fielding any member of the Conisbrough team has done this season.

Denaby were all out for 93 and Linithan figures for the match were four for 37.

On Linithan and A Walker going into battle Conisbrough, it was soon apparent that the visitors were in for an early dispatch. Smith bowled Linithan with the last ball of his first over for none, Walker with the last of his second over, and the reverent W.A.Strawbridge with the last of his third over, his figures then being three for nine. Luther Robinson’s final figures were 8 overs, 4 maidens, 14 runs, 5 wickets and Smith’s figures for the match were 8 overs, 0 maidens, 24 runs, 5 wickets.

To J Day must be given the credit of Conisbrough getting so many as 50. Without his 26 not out the side would have  presented a sorry appearance
