Medals for Denaby Rescuers

There will be a sequel at Doncaster West Riding magistrates court in the near future to the bravery of a Denaby constable and a Conisbrough youth worker in plunging into the flooded River Don in the March floods to rescue a dog.

The officer, PC Stancliffe, and Mr Thomas E Wakefield, ferry cottages, low Road, Conisbrough, a driver employed by Denaby and Cadeby Home Call Karting Committee and sports coach for Conisbrough Youth movement, has received the silver medal and certificate of the RSPCA at presentations at the court.

On March 18 the dog, tied to its kennel, drifted down the Don and settled in flooded fields near Mexborough Toll Bar Bridge. Mr Wakefield swam 200 yards in the flooded river to release the dog, which swam to the top of a small tree nearby and would not move.

PC Stancliffe stripped and swam to the tree and, tying a rope round the dog, towed it to safety.
