Men Walked, Women Ran in this Denaby Football Match

An unusual and amusing “spectacle” was witness by a large holy crowd of about 300 spectators at the Broomhill football ground, Denaby on Wednesday, when the many men customers of the Reresby Arms, Denaby, played the women customers of the Hotel in a charity football match.

The men were only allowed to walk while the women ran, but in several instances the men “walked rings round” the women and despite the men’s handicap the game ended in a 4-4 draw.

The women’s team included two grandmothers, Mrs. D. Greenfield and Mrs. N. Bulcroft.

Although the game was not taken very seriously by the spectators, several men were sent off the field for breaking into a run and for other offences. Many of the fouls by the women were, however, over-looked by the referee, Mr. D. Rose who joined in the holiday spirit, and helped to make the game more of an amusement than a competition. Despite a few cries of “kick him Cathy” the spectators joined in the fun of the game as they ‘encouraged’ their womenfolk to play spectacular football.

The men sent off were, however, allowed to return after a ten minutes ‘punishment’ but for the closing stages of the, match only seven men Players were left on the field.

Goa!scorers were: Mrs. F. Allen, Mrs. I Bedford (2), and Mrs. L. Wheeler for the women; and J. Rose (2), R. Sapey and L. Allen for  the men.

A collection of £4/10/6 was taken at the match in aid of Denaby Fullerton Hospital Comforts Fund. Another collection of £1/1/3 was made on Tuesday when the married men customers beat the single men customers of the Reresby Arms 3-2.

The matches were organised by Mr. F. Whitehead. Although few of the women showed great ‘talent’ they had some idea of the game as several of them are supporters of Denaby Rovers F.C.
