Midland League.

Mexborough’s Biggest Win of Season.

Home clubs in the Midland League did well yesterday, obtaining all the points but six. The only away winners were Denaby United and Scunthorpe United, but Wombwell and Bradford Reserves each got a point.

Grimsby Town Reserves, the leaders, beat Boston 2—0 at home, but it was dull affair. Incidentally, it was Charlie Wrack’s benefit match.

Grimsby were certainly the better side, eand in the Second half Streets kept a remarkably fine goal for Boston. Glover and Craven scored.

A large holiday crowd saw some good football at Newark where Bradford were the visitors, and there was a fitting result in a sharing of four goals and the points. Yorke (Newark) and Ward (Bradford) displayed great tenacity at back, and Suter gave a brilliant display in the visitors’ goal.

Newark were best served by Staniland, half-back, Roseboom and Morton, forwards. Yorke and C. Hall scored for Newark, and Ramsden and Atherton for Bradford.

Wombwell did well to take a point from Scarborough. They were defending for the greater part of the game, but the Scarborough forwards, weakened by an injury to Moss, a local centre forward, on trial, finished badly.

Hodson (Hatfield Colliery), on trial at outside-left for Scarborough, gave a very promising display.

Stockill scored for Scarborough, and Swift for Wombwell, whose defence withstood vigorous attacks in the closing stages.

Five Goals for Wassall.

Mexborough showed their recovery of form by gaining a 6 —0 victory over Hull City Reserves – their most convincing win of the season, and the more creditable because of the absence of Bungay and Allinson from their forward line.

The match was a personal triumph for Wassall, who scored five of Mexborough’s goals, Smith being responsible for the other.

Mexborough were on top in both attack and defence, although Woodhead, the old Denaby back stood up valiantly for the visitors, whose general form was not in accordance with their League record.

In a thrustful Mexborough attack Smith was conspicuous and Wilson was also good, but it was Wassall’s fine finishing which pleased the holiday crowd.

After a Promising start Frickley Colliery faded away and were beaten 3 —1 by Denaby United at  South Elmsall. Gilchrist, McGuiness and Skeel scored for the winners, and Whitley for the losers.

In the second half Frickley were completely outplayed. The Denaby forwards played fast and clever football. Smith, the visitors’ centre half, dominated the game, and Skeels shone as outside left. Frickley generally were weak, the forwards especially being off colour.
