Miners Welfare – 2 The Swimming Baths (picture)

September 1924

Baths

The swimming bath is 104 feet in length and 45 in width. It is provided with collapsible dressing boxes and a moveable diving board, the object being to convert the baths into a cinema during the winters months. Round the baths is a balcony. The concrete and fittings are of the finest possible material and workmanship, and, should the idea of a cinema be abandoned, the building will be immensely suitable for a gymnasium or billiard annex.

The brickwork is excellent. Special asbestos  slating has been used for the roof of the swimming bath. The approach to the Institute is to be attractively laid out with shrubs and pathways, and, when these arrangements are complete, the exterior view will give the impression of a handsome residence, The Institute is a palace of pleasure, and should provide the miner and his family with entertainment and delight for many years to come.

Power is supplied by an electrical generating plant, capable of achieving a pressure of 120 volts with 40 accumulators for storage purposes. There is, also, a dynamo ready to supply power for the suggested cinema.

The furnishing and general equipment is as through as the design and construction is complete. Each room has its special furniture and the billiard room and card rooms have substantial cane-backed seating. The plaster work, mouldings, and dadoes serve to give that finish and distinction which make this building a credit to the contractors and rich acquisition to the community. The Denaby Main Miners’ Welfare Institute is certainly the most complete and handsome recreational hostel in South Yorkshire.

As above stated, the contractor was Mr. William G. Robson, of Sheffield, and among the sub-contractors were cement work and marble mosaic and terrazzo paving, Messrs. Hodkin and Jones, Sheffield; plumbing Mr. Douglas Wild, Sheffield; Steel girder work, Thos. W. Ward, Sheffield;   slating and tiling, Procter & Co., Sheffield; plastering, Walton Bros., Sheffield; painting, B. Whatley; electrical, The General Electrical Co., Sheffield; Brick Materials, etc., Yorkshire Amalgamated Products, Ltd., Doncaster.
