A Big Asset to Conisbrough.

Conisbrough Mona Working Men’s Club is to be developed to the tune of about £30,000 or £40,000… But the membership fee is still expected to remain at two shillings (10p)!

Commission office manager, Mr C.H. Wood, one of the Mona club’s three trustees, told the “South Yorkshire Times” on Monday, “through proper budgeting and looking after our money carefully, we now own every stick and stone in the present building.

About 40 Years Old.

“We even brought the members annual contributions down four shillings to 2, and we don’t expect it will be raised at all. As a result of the new development.”

Although the present club, which is about 40 years old, will probably be left standing as a recreation Hall, extensive new premises are to be built at the side on land bought some time ago, stretching from the main Doncaster Road to Willow Dene.

Detailed plans have to be drawn up, but Mr Wood expects the new building to have a concert room holding up to 600, and the club to have a total membership of around three or 4000.

At the moment, progress has been altered following objections concerning access to the proposed development, and Mr Wood said they would on Sunday be meeting the architect and a brewery representative to discuss the whole situation.

A Big Asset.

Mr Wood, whose brother, Mr Frank Wood, asked for 26 years been secretary of the club, expects the building to be completed sometime next year, and he forecast it will compete with any in South Yorkshire for facilities and entertainments.

“It will be a big asset to Conisbrough,” he said. “It is discouraging to see people going out of the district for their entertainment. We don’t intend to stand by and watch this happen. Many of our members are still buyers over the years. I’m pleased that we are going to be able to fulfil our promises to them.
