New Organ

The following account, extracted from the “Doncaster Chronicle and farmers Journal,” dated May 28, 1847, will be full of interest to the old inhabitants of the parish. –

On Tuesday last a pleasant village of Conisborough was enlivened by the presence of a large number of visitors who went thither from Doncaster, Sheffield, Rotherham, and other places, to hear the services at the church, in connection with the opening of the new organ recently erected there by Messrs. Forster and Andrews, of Hull.

The weather being unusually fine, no doubt, tempted many to go who would, perhaps, have otherwise felt the strains of a new organ and the talented discourses of Dr Hawke but an indifferent remuneration for their pains.

Nevertheless, from the general character of the congregation, at both morning and evening service, their profound attention, and the very reverential manner in which they partook of the solemnities of the occasion – we feel assured that some of them at least had a higher purpose and gratification in view than any more pleasure trip could promise.

The morning service was advertised to commence at 11:30 o’clock, and by that time a great number of visitors had arrived, the inns of the village being full, the turnpike road near the Star lined with carriages, phaetons, and other vehicles.
