Killed by a Shell Splinter

 J.W. Newall

Mr and Mrs Walter Newall, of 87 Mount Pleasant, Sheffield road, Conisbrough have received the sad news that their son, signaller John Walter Newall (R.F.A.) has been killed by a splinter from a shell which fell near his dug out in France.

Signaller Newall enlisted when he was 15 years of age in June 1915.

His Captain writes to say that Newall was one of his best signallers, and he and his brother officers “commend his courage and cheery disposition.”

Several of his comrades write in the same strain. Before enlistment he was employed on the construction of the railway cutting at Clifton.
