No Registrar at Conisbrough
Council to Ask for Adequate Facilities

“What’s the game? Why were we not told?” The question posed by Conisbrough Urban Councils when they learned at their meeting on Wednesday that the office operated by the Registrar of births, marriages and deaths at Castle Farm, Conisbrough on Thursday afternoon and apparently been discontinued.

The matter was originally raise by Mexborough Trades Council, whose delegates expressed indignation that people the office in Denaby (which will open for an hour and 30), or travel into Mexborough.

The matter was discussed by the general purposes committee of the Urban Council on Tuesday, October 15, and it was decided to ask the County Authority to provide adequate facilities in Conisbrough.

On Wednesday the Council expressed surprise that the office had been close and confirm the committee’s action.

“What’s the game?” asked Councillor Gomersall. “I have never heard about it. No one has ever heard about it.  It is too costly to make the journey to Mexborough, especially for old people. And the ‘bus fares are going to go up, too.”  “People are having to travel to I Mexborough at a cost of 1s. 2d. or 1s. 4d. for the convenience of the officials,” said Coun. G. Cheshire, Chairman of Mexborough Trades Council.    “We hope we can have this service reinstated.”

Councillor D Sheldon said it had taken rather a long time to get the service stop because I was surprised to learn the Trade Council has been discontinued. We have had to wait for the Trait Council to say it” he said.

“We must protest about the state of affairs,” said Councillor T Davey, “Conisbrough has a population of 17,000.”
