Not Enough Houses

Conisbrough 1951 Allocation Only 40

Conisbrough Urban Council Housing Committee are not satisfied with Conisbrough’s and Denaby’s allocation of 40 houses for 1951, Coun. D. Sheldon, Committee chairman, told the Council on Monday. ” For a place like this it is only a flea-bite of what we require,” he said.

The Committee were unanimous that 40 houses were insufficient, he continued. The allocation was, no doubt, in accordance with Ministry rules, but the Committee were going to appeal against the figure and ask for more houses for 1951.

The Council confirmed a Housing Committee recommendation that the Principal Regional Officer of the Ministry of Health, Leeds, be informed of the Council’s views.

Coun. G. Cheshire drew attention to the Medical Officer’s monthly report, with particular reference to a Public Health Committee recommendation that in view of the difficulty in obtaining sanatorium beds for treatment of tuberculosis, the Clerk (Mr. R. W. Birch) be instructed to write Doncaster Hospital Management Committee drawing attention to the vacant accommodation at Conisbrough Isolation Hospital, with a view, to the hospital being used for that ‘purpose. The Isolation Hospital, it was alleged, had been half empty for over two years.

Coun. Sheldon thought it was a shame that they had all those people suffering when they knew the hospital was there.

In connection with plans for bringing swimming facilities back to Denaby, Couns. Cheshire, H. Gomersall, J. T. E. Collins, It H. Shephard, the Clerk and the Surveyor (Mr. A. W. R. Taylor) have been appointed to meet any deputation appointed by the West Riding County Council.

They were hoping that the County Council would send down representatives to meet them at the Baths Hall, Com. Cheshire explained. If they could see the size of the scheme the Council had before them they felt that they would be able to get the County Council’s sympathy.

Coun. J. T. E. Collins commented that it was pleasing to note that there was likely to be some move with regard to the baths. It was time something was done so that the filtration plant could be put under way.

Considerable discussion took place on a proposal by the Highways Committee that the owner’s request to retain a garage in New Hill, Conisbrough be refused and he be requested to remove it forthwith.

Coun. Cheshire said they had been “playing ” with this garage well over 12 months, and he thought the time had arrived when they should be making no ” requests,” but seeing that the wishes of the Council were carried out.

The Chairman, Coun. G. Oldfield, J.P., said they could not go further until the next monthly meeting.
