Doctor J. McArthur
Forty Years at Denaby
Friend and counsellor of many residents during the 40 years he had been in practice in Denabv, Doctor John McArthur of The Red House, Denaby, died on Wednesday. He was 78.
Born at Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, Scotland, Doctor McArthur studied at Saint Mungo’s College Glasgow. During his studies he gained fourteen medals and in his fifth year obtained an honours certificate in operative surgery and was appointed one of the demonstrators of human anatomy. He was also appointed a lecturer in zoology, in which a brilliant career was forecast for him, at the College.
Dr. McArthur was a Licentiate of the Faculty of Physicians and. Surgeons, Glasgow, and the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians, Edinburgh.
Upon qualifying, Dr. McArthur was appointed as an assistant at Dilmellington and later at Newmains Lanarkshire.
He came to Denaby as an assistant and some, time later settled in practice in Burnley. In 1910 Dr. McArthur took over a practice at Denaby.
Dr. McArthur was Medical Officer for Conisbrough from the inception of Conisbrough Urban District in 1921 to the introduction of the West Riding Divisional health scheme two years ago,. For 34 years he was lecturer and examiner to the John Ambulance Brigade and was Divisional Surgeon to Denaby Corps. He was also honorary surgeon to Fullerton Hospital, Denaby.
He leaves a widow, three sons (overall doctors) and a daughter.
The funeral will take place today (Friday), a service at Denaby Parish Church at 1:40 p.m., proceeding the cremation at Sheffield.
