Obstructing the Highway at Conisborough

William Stanley, fruit dealer, Barnsley, was charged with obstructing the highway at Conisborough on Good Friday.

Inspector Hamlet deposed that on Good Friday he was on duty at Conisborough, and about 3:10 he saw the defendant with a cart selling oranges in the middle of the highway. He watched him for about 20 minutes, and then he went and spoke to him. He said when spoken to that another policeman told him was all right there. He told him to go and stand in one of the fairgrounds.

He saw him two hours after, and he got about hundred yards in two hours. He then said that he (witness) was the only policeman that had spoken to him.

The Chairman: Why easy not here?

Witness: he said he should not appear, but he would pay the money.

A fine of 10 shillings and costs was imposed.

Clement Cuthbert Coleman, hawker, Rotherham, was also charged with obstructing the highway at Conisborough on Good Friday.

PC Hutchinson stated that on the date in question he was on duty in Conisborough in playing close, in company with Sgt Slack. He there saw the defendant with the dray selling oranges. He watching for about 20 minutes obstructing the highway. It being Good Friday, there was a large amount of traffic, both vehicular and foot.

Sgt Slack corroborated.

Defendant contended that he was not obstructing they are; he was right in the edge bottom.

The Bench inflicted a fine of five shillings and 10 shillings costs.
