United are on the Mend

Denaby United 1 Alfreton Town 4

Denaby should be disappointed by their defeat at the hands of Alfreton Town on Saturday, but not downhearted.

One would not call the home sides play terrifically inspiring, but they showed a great deal of poise and maturity in their tactics, which seems to have been lacking previously. And these surely are the qualities most needed by a side that already possesses a great deal of enthusiasm.

It was evident from the start that Alfreton would be had to handle, but the own defence was shaping very well. Newey, Taylor and Wroe short some deft touches in clamping down on the visiting forwards and will  in fine form throughout the match was soon proving himself with a save from Lunn’s shot of Nevin’s centre with the match only 5 min old.

Then with 15 minutes gone, jubilant Denaby took the lead as Holden’s centre found Lever’s head, and the centre forward was able to push the ball to Gant who headed home.

The sides exchanged attacks into the in the 37th minute of it and got the equaliser – a sorry affair as Stasiukiewicz slipped on the hard, dusty surface and failed to gather Harrison’s 25 yard drive.

Game Opened Out.

Although Denaby have previously been criticised for playing too close, on Saturday they seem willing to open up the game. Their accuracy in this spelt danger for Alfreton, who favoured albeit more compact, but more difficult moves.

It was then more in stamina that Denaby failed, for the visitors went from strength to strength.

So it was that after 76 min Road dropped a corner to Fowler, who headed his side into the lead. Nine minutes later, with Denaby losing their defensive grip, Nevin strode onto the ball after a Morris – Lunn move split the home defence, and the centre forward beat Stasiukiewicz.

2 min from time Harrison added the final nail to the coffin following up a Roe shot with a 25 yard goal..

It was hard lines for Denaby, but they are surely on the mend.
