Pretty Pageantry At Denaby.

A Beautiful Spectacle.

The ceremony of crowning the May Queen in connection with St. Alban’s Roman Catholic Church took place, on Sunday evening. The Sisters of Mercy and the headmasters of the school were responsible for the arrangements.

Glorious weather prevailed and enhanced the beauty of the scene. A short service-was conducted in church by Canon Leteux. The procession passed from the church to the football field, and was witnessed by hundreds of people.

The procession was in the following order: The Infant Department (banner carried by Mary O’Donnell), the infant King (Bernard Egan) and his Queen- (Irene Collins), attended by maids and pages. The May Queen (Kitty Rocks, attmded by her court and by last year’s May Queen (Betty Sully), and the Queen of Erin (Annie Kelly), Joan of Arc (Honor Monoghan), Harp Bearer (Ellen. Wilkinson). and four angels, Mary Sellars, Annie Rush, Kitty Kane, and D. Knight, The Queen of Roses (Katie Cartwright), Queen of Lilies (Sarah Gilinore), Queen of Violets (Mary Rodgers), and St. Alban (B. MacAbe).

Then came the candle bearers and altar boys, with. the banner of St. Alban, then a beautiful banner dedicated to the ” Mother of God,” and following this the ” Children of Mary,” all robed and veiled in white. They carried statuette of the Blessed Virgin and chanted as they walked. The congregation brought up the rear. On arrival at the football field, the statuette was placed on a temporary altar, around while each queen and her court was grouped. This grouping was done by Canon Leteux, and from the hillside looked very imposing and effective. Queen Betty Sully crowned her successor, and while the children of Mary sang the May Queen placed a crown on the head of the statue and paid homage to the “Mother of God.” Canon Leteux explained the ceremony in a short address. After the ceremony service of Benediction was held in church.
