Paul 9, Pens Eight Lines of Prize Winning Verse

A young child’s view of a miner and his work, written in the form of a poem, is part of an award-winning entry from a Denaby schoolboy in a nation-wide junior literary competition.

TheĀ  eight-line poem printed below was written by Paul Neilson, of Firbeck Street, Denaby, whose father, Bill, is a Cadeby miner.

And Paul’s classmate, nine-years-old Cathy Scott, of Tickhill Square, Denaby, has gained equal recognition from the national newspaper who sponsored the competition, with her entry of essays and a poem. Cathy’s father, Mr. Tony Scott, is a Cadeby pit deputy.

Certificates

The two children, pupils of the Denaby St. Alban’s R.C. Junior School, have received certificates for reaching the final selection stage in the competition, which they entered in the summer, when both were eight years old.

School headmistress, Sister De Sales, said : “To get to this stage of a national competition is a great achievement, and I am very pleased.”

“Miners”

Miners, miners, working all the time,
Very deep down in a dirty old mine,
In the mine it is dark and damp,
The only light is the miners lamp.

They work and sweat, day by day,
They work very hard for their pay;
Some work day and some work night,
And all to keep our fireside bright.
