Police!
The Earl of Yarborough’s agent has very properly issued a warning that if wanton damage to the fabric of Conisborough Castle continues the grounds will be closed to the public. And it will serve the public right, too.
This is not a case in which the innocent suffer for the guilty. The public realises too little that it is everybody’s business to hound and to keep under the rascals who go about defiling and damaging that which was meant, either by courtesy or right, for the common enjoyment. It is no mere police matter; in such cases everybody has a duty to act “in the name of the law” without waiting to be called upon.
People stupidly watch children and larrikins destroying flower beds, bushes, young trees, fences, swings, and the peace of the neighbourhood, and they say, “How horrid: Why don’t the police stop it?”
They are the police; asleep on their beat.
