Presentation to Mr W. H. Chambers.

The members of the Denaby corps of the St John ambulance Brigade had a march out on Saturday, touring through Mexborough and district. They met at their headquarters, the Denaby schools, and before they started a very interesting little ceremony was witnessed.

Sgt Brough presented to their chief officer, Mr W. H. Chambers, a framed photograph of the Denaby corps who attended the annual camp at Blackpool. The picture is framed in old English oak, and was taken by Messrs Lord and co-., Artists, etc, Blackpool.

Mr H. S. Witty said that they would be pleased if Mr Chambers would accept it as a small memento from the corps, and said that it had been subscribed for by everyone of them in return for the great interests, he (Mr Chambers) took in the corps. Sgt Brough said it gave him very great pleasure to be able to make the presentation, and he hoped that Mr Chambers would accept it in the spirit it was given,

Mr Chambers suitably acknowledged the gift. It came as a surprise to him, and he congratulated them on keeping it a secret, as he had not heard a word about it. He was very much obliged to them, and said he was very pleased to hear that the corps was one of the smartest at the camp, both for their sobriety, good conduct, etc, and said that they were a credit to the village, he hoped that they would continue to be so.

The order for “falling in” was then given, and the corps started on the march heralded by their band under the leadership of Mr E. Trout. The corps were composed as follows: –

Officers, Mr W. H. Chambers, Mr H. S. Witty, Mr W. Simpkins, Sergeants F. Brough and J. W. Beal. Cpl’s F. Phipps and R. White, with 33 privates.

Cpl F Phipps was in charge of the ambulance wagon section, and Cpl R. White of the litter section.

On Sunday the full corps turned out to attend Divine service at the Parish Church in the morning. The service was very appropriate, and the hymns were sung with much vigour by the men.

I am asked to announce that the officers will be pleased to welcome in the new recruits to the corps providing that they hold one of the St John ambulance certificates. The officers of the ambulance corps specially wish to thank Mr F. Kelley, of Wath, for his kindness place in his field disposal of the brigade, for providing the refreshments the men. During their stay the band delighted the spectators by rendering several pieces of music.
