Prize fight at Mexborough

Early on Sunday morning, a prize fight took place between two Denaby Main miners for £5 a side, on the Pastures at the east end of Mexborough.

The match is said to have been made several weeks ago, but no date was fixed for the encounter until Saturday night, when the men decided to “stake up” and fight next morning.

The combatants and their bankers, who turned up in considerable numbers, assembled at the appointed spot shortly after 6 o’clock, and the battle was soon begun.

Betting ruled in favour of the Welshman, who was the heavier, his opponent been a native of Staffordshire.

Both for pluckily, and at the end of an hour and 20 minutes the Welshman was compelled to give the victory to his opponent, consequent on his wrist been sprain.

Both men were heavily punished.
