Retirement from Railway Service  after 45 years
Managed 3000 Trip

Yesterday, Mr. Burnell Thornton, of Elm Green Lane, Conisborough, retired from railway service on reaching the age of 60, after 45 years of clerical work.

Mr. Thornton commenced in 1889 in the goods department at Wombwell. He shortly afterwards moved to Mexborough, where he spent three years before being appointed booking clerk at Conisborough, a position he occupied for 35 years prior to a move to Swinton where he has spent the last three years.

The biggest job Mr F. Thornton handled at Conisborough was the colliery trip to Blackpool some few years ago. When 3000 persons travelled.

He was at Wombwell when the G. C. R. took over from the M. S and L., and at Conisborough when the L. N. E.R.  swallowed up the G. C. R.
