Retirement Gift for Conisbro’ Railman

Mr. Harry Preston (66), 6, Makin Street, Mexborough, shunter at Conisbrough station for the past 31 years, was presented a with a wallet containing treasury notes by Mr. C. P. Trayes, – former relief stationmaster at Conisbrough, and Doncaster District Traffic Manager’s Inspector, at the Castle Inn, Conisbrough, on Monday, to mark his retirement.

Present stationmaster at Conisbrough, Mr. R. S. Lamb, paid tribute to Mr. Preston’s long, efficient and devoted service, and said all the time Mr. Preston had worked at Conisbrough he had never had a day off through illness. “We shall miss Harry”, he said. In past years’ he has become a part of Conisbrough station”.

Letters from former stationmasters at Conisbrough were received paying tribute to Mr. Preston and wishing him a long and happy retirement.

Mrs. Mary Preston (58), was presented with a bouquet.

Mr. Preston has retired after 38 years’ service on the railways, the first seven years being’ spent at Mexborough. He came to Mexborough from Wolverhampton, where he was born. During the last two years of the 1914-18 war he served with the R.A.M.C. and was demobilised with the rank of  sergeant. He began his service with the railway as a signalman and lampman.

Mrs Preston was born in Burslem, Staffs. Mr & Mrs Preston have six children, Mrs. Betty Elsey  (Mexborough), Mrs. D. Brookes (Mexborough) Mrs. Marjorie Charlesworth (Conisbrough), Mrs Jean Goane (Bolton), Mr Harry Preston (Junior) (Rawmarsh) and Mr James Preston (Mexborough). They have 15 grandchildren.
